You can download and install plug-ins or libraries to add extra functionality to Audacity. Plug-ins can give you extra effects, or more audio generation and analysis capability. Adding libraries can allow you to import or export additional audio formats.

Plug-in Installation

Installation instructions for plug-ins are provided in the Audacity manual. Note that the instructions vary according to platform (Windows / Mac / Linux) and the type of plug-in.

Nyquist Plug-ins

Audacity has built-in support for Nyquist effects on all operating systems. You can download additional Nyquist plug-ins, or create your own using the Nyquist programming language. Nyquist code can be conveniently tested using 'Nyquist Prompt' under the Effect menu.

LV2 Plug-ins

Audacity has built-in support for LV2 plug-ins, which are an extensible successor of LADSPA effects. LV2 plug-ins are mostly built for Linux, but Audacity supports LV2 on all operating systems. To install LV2 plug-ins, place them in the system LV2 location then use the Plug-ins Manager to enable the new plug-ins as in the plug-in installation instructions.

VST Plug-ins

Audacity can load VST effects (but not VST instruments) on all operating systems. The VST Enabler is no longer required. Install the VST effects to the Audacity Plug-Ins folder on Windows, to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/Plug-Ins on OS X/macOS or to system locations. Then use the Plug-ins Manager to enable the new plug-ins as in the plug-in installation instructions above.

VST effects can be found on many plug-in sites such as:

• KVR Audio: Windows, Mac
• Open Directory (Windows, Mac).

Audio Unit Plug-ins

On Mac OS X only, you can add Audio Unit plug-ins to the system plug-in directories (Audacity will not recognize any Audio Units in its own 'plug-ins' folder). Then use the Plug-ins Manager to enable the new plug-ins and any required Apple Audio Units as in the plug-in installation instructions above.

Experimental modules offer a further way to extend Audacity with new features.

LADSPA Plug-ins

LADSPA is superseded by LV2. These plug-ins are mostly built for Linux, but some old LADSPA plug-ins are available via the Legacy Windows and Legacy Mac sections.

Hello: I'm not sure where to post this so I posted it here and on the windows unstable beta forum also.
I am using Audacity on a Vista Home Premium computer.
I'm new to Audacity. I love the fact that I can record and add to other audio I have in my music folders.

Audacity Music Editor

Here's my problem. I want to use the new file that I created on my Mp3 player. I want to transfer (export) to Windows Media Player 11. (I like the file size of WMA and so I prefer to use that.) How do I do that?
I tried to export it as a .WAV file to my 'Spin it Again' program in an attempt to change the .WAV file to a .WMA file but I can't find the .WAV file or get it to work on my 'spin it again' program.
So how can I go about exporting the audio file from audacity in a file format that then can be recognized by Windows media player? I tried the MP3 export but it didn't work even with the 'lame' download. I can't find those files anywhere. I just want to make the files into WMA files. How can I do that? What other free programs can I use to change it into a WMA file?
I haven't seen any other questions regarding this (believe me I've looked) and so, obviously, no answers. I'm I asking too much?
Any information will be greatly appreciated. I am a basic novice so any instructions will need to be the 'for dummies' version. Thank you.

For Windows OS

Step 1. Go to the desktop of your computer and right-click on the sound or Volume icon. The dialog box for sound devices will pop-up.

Step 2. Change partition scheme disk utility. Click on the Playback devices and find your default playback device. Your default device has a small green circle with a checkmark.

Step 3. Open your Audacity and click on the Edit Menu. Select Preferences or press Ctrl+p. From the left menu, click on Devices and select Windows WASAPI from the drop-down menu in the Host bar. For Playback, select your default device that has been enabled in your sound device settings. For Recording, you must also select the default playback device and leave the channel set for 2 Channels. Click OK.

There's an easy way to do this. You can see the device toolbar that contains the selection of your audio host and recording device. Go there and click the enabled default playback of your computer.

Step 4. You can start recording audio from your computer by clicking the Record button on top of the Audacity's interface. You can pause or stop your recording by clicking the specific buttons on the Transport toolbar for these commands. For Mac OS

• Step 1. Get Audacity. You may also download Soundflower to enable the routing of the sound from other applications and not just from the default speakers.
• Step 2. Go to the Apple menu and Select Open System Preferences. Select sounds and got to the Output tab and set the Soundflower.
• Step 3. Configure your device preferences. On the device toolbar of the Audacity's interface, select the default playback of your computer including the audio host and recording device, and set the channel for 2 channels (stereo).
• Step 4. Start recording audio from your computer or websites like YouTube. Surely, you'd be a star with this user-friendly tool.

To record the audio, just open your audio player or any music website, and play the sound you want to capture. At the same time, click the record button in Audacity and wait until it finished recording. You may choose to pause or to stop the recording, it all depends on you. Then go on editing or saving your recorded audio file.
